First Year Showcase!

We’ve got another project coming up which will, hopefully, be First Year Showcase worthy. You can get a sense of the types of things that might be appropriate by taking a look at last year’s showcase.

One thing you might notice while looking at last years showcase is that it’s hosted on a WordPress site. Thus, the types of tools we’ve learned to build in this class might make really nice projects!

One more map

As we’ve seen, maps can be pretty impressive, particularly if there’s some level of interactivity. Datawrapper provides three types of maps:

  • Choropleth maps
    • Maps broken into regions shaded according to data.
  • Symbol maps
    • Maps with symbols indicating the general location of data.
  • Locator maps
    • Maps indicating the precise location of places.

Locator maps

Since Datawrapper has just one more type of map and we’ve learned about the previous two, it seems reasonable to hope that we might learn about the last type. Here are two examples:

UNC system schools

This map shows the locations of all 14 schools in the UNC System. The schools are labeled with their abbreviations but you can over over them to get their full name.

Some spots at UNCA

Here are a few of my hangouts at UNCA.

A symbol map

Locator maps and symbols maps seem quite similar so let's examine the differences.

  • Locator maps are intended to represent the exact locations of a few places. As such, they are built on top of detailed Open Street Map tiles.
  • Symbol maps are intended to indicate the general locations larger data sets. As such, they are built on top of simple boundary maps and often feature clustering.

Here's an example symbol map:
