Stats and winning percentage

in college basketball

In most team sports, I guess that it’s generally pretty obvious that the more points you score the more games you’re likely to win. The scatter plot below, for example, indicates how points scored in throughout a college basketball season are related to a team’s winning percentage.

What should we emphasize to improve the team, though? Rebounds? Assists? Free throws? Three point shots? There are statistics on all of these things and we can explore how they are related using regression.

The select menu below, for example, allows you to explore how points scored, assists, and three point field goals are related to winning percentage. The line is called the regression line and allows you to predict winning percentage based on your performance in those categories. It’s obviously not perfect but the correlation gives you some sense as to how good it is.
